Frontline Plus is one of the most well-known flea and tick treatments in the UK. Its biggest advantage is that it is classified as NFA-VPS, meaning you do not need a veterinary prescription to buy it — you can purchase it from pet shops, online retailers, and pharmacies without a vet visit.
Price Comparison (Dogs, 3 Pipettes, Medium 10–20kg)
- From your vet: £20–£35
- Online pet pharmacies: £12–£20
- Supermarkets/pet shops: £15–£25
- Amazon: £10–£18 (check seller is authorised)
What Frontline Plus Does
Frontline Plus contains fipronil (kills adult fleas and ticks) and S-methoprene (an insect growth regulator that kills flea eggs and larvae). It is a monthly spot-on treatment applied to the back of the neck.
- Kills fleas: Within 24 hours
- Kills ticks: Within 48 hours
- Prevents reinfestation: For 4 weeks (fleas) and 2 weeks (ticks)
- Breaks flea lifecycle: S-methoprene prevents eggs and larvae developing
Limitations
Frontline Plus does NOT treat or prevent:
- Worms (roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm, lungworm)
- Ear mites
- Heartworm
You will need a separate worming product. Also, there are increasing reports of flea resistance to fipronil in some UK areas. If Frontline Plus does not seem to be working, discuss prescription alternatives (NexGard, Bravecto, Simparica) with your vet.
Frontline Plus for Cats
The cat formulation costs £10–£18 for a 3-pack from online retailers. It is the same active ingredients but at a lower concentration suitable for cats. Never use dog Frontline on cats.
Buying Genuine Products
When buying online, ensure you are purchasing genuine UK-licensed Frontline Plus. Look for the VMD marketing authorisation number on the packaging. Avoid suspiciously cheap products from overseas sellers, as they may be counterfeit, expired, or formulated differently.
