Surolan is the most commonly prescribed ear drop treatment for dogs and cats with otitis externa (ear canal infections). It contains miconazole (antifungal), polymyxin B (antibiotic), and prednisolone (anti-inflammatory steroid) — a triple-action formula that treats the most common causes of ear infection simultaneously.

When Is Surolan Prescribed?
Surolan is prescribed for ear infections caused by bacteria, yeast (Malassezia), and ear mites. Your vet will typically take an ear swab (cytology) to confirm the type of infection before prescribing.
A standard treatment course is 5–15 drops per ear, twice daily, for 7–14 days. The 15ml bottle is usually sufficient for a single treatment course.
Repeat Prescriptions for Chronic Ears
Dogs with chronic or recurring ear infections (common in Cocker Spaniels, Labradors, Bulldogs, and Shar Peis) may need Surolan frequently. Getting a written prescription makes sense if your dog needs treatment several times a year. A 6-month prescription allows you to keep ear drops at home and start treatment as soon as you notice signs of infection, potentially avoiding a consultation fee each time.
Alternative Ear Treatments
- Easotic: A once-daily ear treatment (vs Surolan's twice daily). More convenient but often more expensive: £15–£25 online
- Osurnia: A gel applied by the vet that lasts 7 days per dose (only 2 applications needed). Costs £25–£45 per course but saves on daily ear drops
- Canaural: An older ear drop formula. Similar price to Surolan: £10–£20 online
