Dog Kennel Cough Vaccination Cost UK

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is one of the most common infectious diseases in UK dogs. It causes a persistent, hacking cough that can last 2–3 weeks and is highly contagious. The kennel cough vaccine is not part of the core vaccination schedule but is strongly recommended for dogs that socialise with other dogs.

Detailed guide

What You Need to Know

The kennel cough vaccine is administered as drops or a spray into the nose (intranasal), which means it works directly where the infection enters the body. It protects against Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus — the two most common causes of kennel cough.

Most kennels, doggy daycare facilities, and group dog walking services require an up-to-date kennel cough vaccination. Some also require it to be given at least 2 weeks before your dog attends, so plan ahead if you are booking holiday kennels.

The vaccine is not 100% effective because kennel cough can be caused by several different pathogens. However, vaccinated dogs that do catch kennel cough typically have much milder symptoms and recover faster.

If your dog does catch kennel cough, most cases resolve on their own within 2–3 weeks. Your vet may prescribe anti-inflammatories and a cough suppressant (£20–£40). Antibiotics are only needed if a secondary bacterial infection develops. In rare cases, kennel cough can progress to pneumonia — particularly in puppies, elderly dogs, and those with compromised immune systems — which can cost £500–£2,000 to treat.

Dogs that never meet other dogs (very rare in the UK) may not need this vaccine. Discuss your dog's lifestyle with your vet.

Tips to Reduce Costs

Book the kennel cough vaccine at the same appointment as your annual booster — many vets discount it when combined.

Allow 2 weeks before your dog enters kennels or daycare — the vaccine takes time to reach full effectiveness.

Even vaccinated dogs can catch kennel cough (like the human flu jab), but symptoms are usually much milder.

Most kennels, doggy daycare, and group dog walks require proof of kennel cough vaccination.

The intranasal vaccine works faster than injectable alternatives — useful if your dog needs protection quickly.
