Annual Vet Check-Up: What to Expect and Cost UK
An annual health check is the single most important preventive measure for your pet. It allows your vet to catch problems early — before they become expensive emergencies. Most vets recommend yearly checks for adult pets and twice-yearly for seniors (dogs over 7, cats over 10).

What You Need to Know
During an annual check-up, your vet will typically examine your pet from nose to tail. This includes: checking teeth and gums for dental disease, listening to the heart and lungs, feeling the abdomen for organ enlargement or masses, assessing joint mobility, checking eyes and ears, examining the skin and coat, and reviewing weight and body condition.
If your pet is due for booster vaccinations, these are usually given at the same appointment. For dogs, the annual booster covers leptospirosis and kennel cough, while the core vaccines (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis) are boosted every three years. For cats, annual boosters cover feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) for outdoor cats, while core vaccines (parvovirus, calicivirus, herpesvirus) are boosted every three years.
For senior pets, your vet may recommend a blood test to check kidney function, liver function, thyroid levels, and blood sugar. This can detect problems like chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism before symptoms appear. Early detection of kidney disease in cats, for example, can add years to their life with proper management.
Many practices now offer "wellness plans" that bundle the annual check-up, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, and sometimes dental checks into a monthly payment of £10–£25. These can offer genuine savings if you would buy all those services anyway.
Tips to Reduce Costs
Many practices offer free or discounted annual check-ups if you buy your boosters at the same time.
Write down any concerns or behavioural changes before your appointment — it is easy to forget in the consulting room.
Ask for a written summary of findings and any recommended follow-up.
If your pet is on a health plan, the annual check is usually included at no extra cost.
Some practices offer nurse clinics for weight checks and nail trims at lower cost than a full vet consultation.
Senior pets (dogs 7+, cats 10+) benefit from twice-yearly checks — many conditions are treatable if caught early.
