Many pet owners are cautious about buying medication online, and understandably so. However, online pet pharmacies that are properly registered and regulated are just as safe as buying from your vet — and significantly cheaper.
Are They Safe? Yes, If VMD-Registered
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) regulates who can sell veterinary medicines in the UK. Online pet pharmacies must be registered with the VMD and undergo regular inspections. They must employ qualified pharmacists and/or SQPs (Suitably Qualified Persons) who oversee the dispensing of medication.
The medication sold by registered online pharmacies is:
- Genuine, UK-licensed products from the same manufacturers that supply vet practices
- Stored in proper pharmaceutical conditions (temperature-controlled, etc.)
- Within expiry date
- Dispensed by qualified professionals
How to Check a Pharmacy Is Legitimate
- Check the VMD's online register of approved retailers at vmd.defra.gov.uk
- Look for the VMD registration number on the pharmacy's website
- Verify the pharmacy has a UK address and contact details
- Check for reviews on Trustpilot and Google
Red Flags: When to Avoid
- No VMD registration visible: If you cannot find a registration number, do not buy
- Prices that seem too good to be true: Products at 90%+ discount may be counterfeit
- Selling POM-V medication without requiring a prescription: This is illegal. Any site selling prescription medication without verification is operating illegally
- Based outside the UK: Foreign pharmacies may sell products not licensed for the UK market, with different formulations or packaging
- No qualified staff listed: Legitimate pharmacies list their pharmacist and/or SQPs
Common Concerns Addressed
"My vet says online medication is not as good." This is not true. UK-licensed medication from registered pharmacies is identical to what your vet dispenses. It comes from the same manufacturers. Some vets discourage online purchasing because they lose the significant markup they charge on dispensed medication.
"What if I get the wrong product?" Registered pharmacies employ qualified professionals who check prescriptions against the order. If there is a query, they will contact your vet. This is the same process as a human pharmacy.
"What about storage and shipping?" Reputable pharmacies use appropriate packaging for temperature-sensitive products. Products requiring refrigeration (like some vaccines or insulin) are shipped in insulated packaging with ice packs.
