Pet insurance comparison can be overwhelming, with dozens of providers offering different policy types, limits, and exclusions. This guide helps you understand what to look for so you can compare policies meaningfully and find the best value for your pet.
Policy Types Explained
Lifetime Cover (Recommended)
The most comprehensive type. Covers each condition for your pet's entire life, with the per-condition limit renewed each year when you renew the policy. Best for chronic conditions that need ongoing treatment.
Cost: £25–£60/month (dogs), £15–£35/month (cats)
Annual / Maximum Benefit
Covers each condition up to a set limit. Once the limit is reached for a condition, it is never covered again (even if you renew). Cheaper than lifetime but leaves you exposed for chronic conditions.
Cost: £15–£35/month (dogs), £10–£25/month (cats)
Time-Limited (12 Month)
Covers each condition for 12 months from the first treatment date, regardless of whether the limit has been reached. After 12 months, the condition becomes a pre-existing exclusion. Not suitable for chronic conditions.
Cost: £10–£25/month (dogs), £8–£18/month (cats)
Accident Only
Only covers accidents, not illness. Very limited but very cheap. Only suitable if you can afford to pay for illness treatment out of pocket.
Cost: £5–£15/month
Key Factors to Compare
- Per-condition limit: The maximum the insurer will pay for each separate condition. Aim for £5,000 minimum, ideally £7,000–£15,000
- Annual limit: Some policies cap the total payout per year across all conditions
- Excess: The amount you pay before the insurer pays. Typical range: £75–£300. Higher excess = lower premium
- Co-payment: Some policies require you to pay a percentage (often 20%) of each claim, especially for older pets
- Waiting period: The time after policy start before you can claim (typically 14 days for illness, 48 hours for accidents)
- Exclusions: Check breed-specific exclusions, bilateral condition exclusions, dental exclusions, and behavioural treatment exclusions
Where to Compare
Use comparison sites to get multiple quotes:
- MoneySuperMarket
- GoCompare
- Compare the Market
- Confused.com
Also get direct quotes from major pet insurers (Petplan, Bought By Many, Animal Friends, More Than, Direct Line) as they do not always appear on comparison sites.
Top Tips
- Insure your pet as young as possible — before any conditions develop
- Never let a policy lapse — you will lose cover for any conditions claimed during the previous policy
- Read the policy document, not just the summary — the exclusions section is where the important details hide
- Do not choose based on price alone — a cheap policy with a £2,000 per-condition limit is almost useless for serious illness
