About

What is Semintra?

Semintra is an oral solution containing telmisartan, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. It is the only angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) licensed specifically for cats in the UK. It is indicated for the reduction of proteinuria associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats.

Chronic kidney disease affects up to 30% of cats over 15 years old and is one of the leading causes of death in older cats. Semintra works by blocking the angiotensin II receptor, which reduces pressure within the kidney glomeruli and decreases protein leakage into the urine. Reducing proteinuria is associated with slower progression of kidney disease.

The key advantage of Semintra is its liquid formulation. Many cats with kidney disease are difficult to tablet, and the oral solution with dosing syringe makes administration much easier. The 4 mg/ml concentration means most cats need less than 1 ml per dose. It also comes as 10 mg tablets for cats that prefer solid medication.
