About

What is Piriton (Chlorphenamine)?

Piriton is a brand name for chlorphenamine maleate, a first-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking H1 histamine receptors, reducing the allergic response that causes itching, swelling and sneezing. While designed for humans, it is commonly used off-label in dogs for mild allergic reactions.

It is important to understand that antihistamines are far less effective in dogs than in humans. Only about 10-30% of allergic dogs show meaningful improvement with antihistamines. Dogs have different histamine receptor distributions, meaning antihistamines alone rarely control significant allergic skin disease.

That said, Piriton can be useful for mild seasonal allergies, insect bites and stings, acute hives (urticaria), and as a first-try before escalating to more expensive prescription options. It is very safe and extremely cheap.

Alternatives

More Effective Alternatives

If Piriton is not controlling your dog's itching, these prescription options are far more effective.

Apoquel (Oclacitinib)

Far more effective than Piriton. Works within 4 hours. Targets the itch pathway specifically. POM-V prescription required. See our Apoquel guide.

Cytopoint Injection

Monthly injection for atopic dermatitis. No daily tablets. Does not suppress the immune system. See our Cytopoint guide.

Cetirizine (Second-Gen Antihistamine)

Non-drowsy antihistamine. Similar (limited) effectiveness to Piriton but less sedating. Also OTC. Sometimes tried if Piriton causes too much drowsiness.
