What is Gabapentin?
Gabapentin was originally developed as an anti-epileptic drug for humans but has become one of the most useful medications in feline medicine. It is used off-label (but very widely) in cats for pain management, anxiety reduction and as a pre-visit sedative.
It works by modulating calcium channels in the nervous system, reducing the transmission of pain signals and dampening the fear/anxiety response. Unlike NSAIDs (like Metacam), gabapentin does not damage the kidneys, making it one of the safest pain medications for cats, especially older cats with kidney disease.
The most common use in the UK is as a pre-vet visit sedative. A single dose given 90 minutes before a vet appointment significantly reduces stress, fear and aggression, making examinations safer and less traumatic for both the cat and the veterinary team. Many vets now recommend gabapentin before every visit for anxious cats.

Gabapentin Dosage for Cats
Dosage varies by purpose. Always follow your vet's instructions.
Pre-Vet Visit Anxiety
50-100 mg per cat, given as a single dose 90 minutes before the appointment. Most vets prescribe 100 mg capsules. Can be opened and mixed into a small amount of food or treat.
Chronic Pain (Arthritis, Nerve Pain)
5-10 mg/kg twice daily (every 12 hours). For a 4 kg cat, this is typically 25-50 mg twice daily. Start low and increase gradually. Takes 1-2 weeks to see full effect.
Seizure Control
5-10 mg/kg two to three times daily. Used as an adjunct with other anti-epileptic medications. Dose adjustments based on seizure control and side effects.
Important: Check that gabapentin capsules do NOT contain xylitol (an artificial sweetener toxic to cats). Human gabapentin liquid formulations often contain xylitol. Veterinary-dispensed capsules and specially compounded formulations are xylitol-free.

Alternatives to Gabapentin for Cats
Solensia (Frunevetmab)
Monthly injection for feline osteoarthritis. Anti-NGF monoclonal antibody. More expensive (£60-£90/injection) but does not cause sedation. Best for arthritis pain specifically.
Metacam for Cats (Meloxicam)
NSAID for short-term pain relief (5 days max in UK). Effective but carries kidney risks. Not suitable for cats with any kidney disease. See our Metacam for cats guide.
Feliway Spray (For Anxiety Only)
Synthetic feline pheromone spray for carrier and vet visit stress. OTC, no prescription needed. Less effective than gabapentin for severe anxiety but can be used together. Around £10-£15 per bottle.
