Pomeranians are spirited toy dogs with a luxurious double coat. Their small size keeps medication costs low, but they share the typical toy breed health concerns — dental disease, luxating patellas, and tracheal problems — plus a unique coat condition called alopecia X.

Expected Annual Vet Costs

  • Routine preventative care: £100–£200
  • Total annual vet costs including illness/injury: £300–£550
  • Pet insurance: £12–£28/month
  • Professional grooming: £25–£45 every 6–8 weeks
  • Typical lifespan: 12–16 years

Common Health Issues

Luxating patella is one of the most common orthopaedic issues in Pomeranians. The kneecap slips out of place, causing intermittent or persistent lameness. Conservative management works for mild cases, but surgical correction costs £1,000–£2,500 per knee.

Dental disease is a major concern. Like all toy breeds, Pomeranians have crowded teeth in small jaws. Professional dental cleaning under anaesthetic costs £300–£700, and many Poms need this every 1–2 years. Extractions add to the cost.

Tracheal collapse causes a characteristic honking cough, often worsened by excitement, pulling on a lead, or obesity. Medical management with cough suppressants and anti-inflammatories costs £20–£50 per month. Severe cases may need tracheal stenting (£2,000–£4,000).

Alopecia X (black skin disease) is a cosmetic condition particularly common in Pomeranians. It causes symmetrical hair loss and skin darkening. It is not painful but investigation to rule out other causes (Cushing's, thyroid) costs £200–£500. Treatment options are limited and often unsuccessful.

Hypoglycaemia can affect Pomeranian puppies and very small adults. Emergency treatment costs £200–£500.

Heart disease including patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occurs at moderate rates. PDA surgery costs £2,000–£4,000 at a specialist.

Insurance Recommendations

Lifetime cover with at least £4,000 per condition is recommended. Low premiums (£12–£28 per month) make insurance good value for this breed.

How to Save on Vet Costs

  • Daily tooth brushing: The most impactful cost-saving measure for any toy breed
  • Harness instead of collar: Reduces pressure on the trachea and helps prevent tracheal collapse
  • Written prescriptions: Buy any ongoing medications 40–70% cheaper from online pharmacies
  • Weight management: Even small amounts of excess weight worsen patella and trachea problems
  • Compare vet prices: Use VetCost to compare consultation fees near you (national average £62)
