Persians are one of the most expensive cat breeds to maintain in terms of veterinary costs. Their flat (brachycephalic) face, long coat, and genetic predisposition to kidney disease mean owners need to budget carefully. Persians also require professional grooming, adding to the overall cost of ownership.
Expected Annual Vet Costs
- Routine preventative care: £120–£220
- Total annual vet costs including illness/injury: £400–£800
- Pet insurance: £15–£35/month
- Professional grooming: £40–£60 every 6–8 weeks (additional to vet costs)
- Typical lifespan: 12–17 years
Common Health Issues
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the most significant health concern. Around 36–49% of Persians are affected. Cysts develop in the kidneys from birth and gradually enlarge, eventually causing kidney failure. DNA testing costs £40–£60. Kidney disease management including prescription diet, phosphate binders, and subcutaneous fluids costs £50–£200 per month.
Brachycephalic airway issues cause breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather or during stress. Severely affected cats may need corrective surgery costing £1,000–£2,500.
Eye problems are very common due to the flat face. Excessive tearing, corneal ulcers, and entropion (inward-rolling eyelids) occur frequently. Corneal ulcer treatment costs £200–£500 per episode. Entropion surgery costs £500–£1,500.
Skin fold dermatitis around the face and nose requires daily cleaning to prevent infection. If infections develop, treatment costs £50–£150 per episode.
Dental disease is common due to the altered jaw structure. Overcrowded teeth trap food and bacteria. Dental procedures cost £300–£900.
Insurance Recommendations
Persians need lifetime cover with at least £7,000 per condition. PKD alone can cost thousands over a cat's lifetime. Premiums run £15–£35 per month but increase significantly with age. Insure early — PKD is a pre-existing condition once diagnosed.
How to Save on Vet Costs
- PKD DNA testing: Know your cat's status early. A £40–£60 test can inform your financial planning for years ahead
- Written prescriptions: Kidney diets and medications are 40–70% cheaper from online pharmacies
- Daily eye and face cleaning: Prevents costly skin and eye infections
- Compare vet prices: Use VetCost to compare practices — the average consultation is £62 nationally
- Home grooming: Daily brushing reduces the frequency of professional grooming visits
Lifetime Veterinary Costs
Over a 12–17 year lifespan, expect £7,000–£18,000 in total vet costs. Persians with PKD that progresses to chronic kidney disease will be at the top of this range.
